After School Overview

NSNP’s youth programs cater to 50 children daily between the ages of 6 and 18. NSNP serves the working parent of these children by providing a safe and supervised environment for the children during the standard workday. The youth receive homework aid, recreation time, and enrichment activities. The NSNP After School Program is a low cost service to local families and strives to engage youth in educational and character enhancement programs. From these services, children build self-esteem and coping skills that enable them to make positive life choices. The youth NSNP targets reside in households in the West Kensington area of Philadelphia.

Prodigies
Prodigies is a leadership development program for youth ages 14-17. Currently, Prodigies is doing media/computer arts, theatre, a youth advisory council, and an entrepreneurial silk-screening project.

Environmental Ambassadors
Park Patrol was started by two teenagers concerned about their environment, particularly Norris Square Park. Since then, Park Patrol has grown into a corps of young adults (ages 12-13) who maintain Norris Square Park during after school hours with extended hours during the summer months. Park Patrol provides a peer support group for youth, encourages positive interests and steers youth away from drugs and violence. Weekly clean-ups, recycling, monitoring trees, and educating neighbors are all aspects the job. The group also engages in field trips and other fun, educational, and outward bound activities.

CULTURAL AMBASSADORS
Children ages 6-11 are NSNP’s youngest participants in the program. These children receive homework aid and recreation time in Norris Square Park on a daily basis. Latino dance, African drumming, gardening, cooking, arts and crafts, computer classes and drama are just some of the activities offered. Children also play sports, non-competitive games, go on field trips. The After School program is designed for children to explore their world, learn their own value and develop a positive sense of self.
